Software Requirements for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services

A minimum set of software requirements are suggested for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) to implement best practices in the domain of climate monitoring, forecasting and verifications.

System requirements

Before installing the softwares, the user shall ensure that his computer/laptop meet the following requirements:

  • Operating system: Windows (64 bit, Windows version 7.0 or above), Linux or Macintosh
  • Memory: 4 GB or more
  • Free disk space: 10 GB or more
  • For windows users: a windows winzip or 7-zip utility to unpack a tar file
  • Internet connection

Software requirements

  • Cygwin: tool to allow Unix or Linux applications to be compiled and run under a Windows Operating System
  • GrADS (v2.0.2 for Windows users): interactive software to manipulate and visualize geophysical data
  • GNU FORTRAN Compiler
  • GNU precision calculator: basic calculator (bc)
  • notepad ++ (text editor under Windows) or gedit (text editor under Linux and Macintosh)
  • GNU wget: command-line utility for retrieving files using HTTP, HTTPS and FTP protocols
  • cURL: command-line tool for making HTTP requests
  • ImageMagick: collection of tools to read and edit images
  • GDAL (v2.1.2 or later): command line tool to read and rasterize geospatial data
