Dear Colleagues,
Please SAVE-THE-DATE for NOAA's 50th Climate Diagnostics Prediction and Applications Workshop (CDPAW). The workshop will be held at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) in College Park, Maryland on September 1–4, 2026. The workshop will be jointly hosted by the University of Maryland Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and is co-sponsored by the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) within the National Weather Service (NWS). This workshop marks the official joining of the Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop (CDPW) and the Climate Prediction Applications Science Workshop (CPASW).
The workshop will feature oral presentations, invited speakers, panel discussions, and poster sessions.

The workshop will focus on four major themes including:
- Emerging Technologies for Prediction of Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) Climate: Advances in S2S prediction of precipitation, temperature, and high-impact climate and weather extremes. Emerging technologies include data-driven AI/ML prediction systems, weather regimes, forecasts of opportunity, new dynamical forecast systems, multi-model ensembles, post-processing, and hybrid statistical-dynamical methods. High-impact climate and weather extremes include drought, flooding, precipitation extremes, heatwaves, cold spells, severe weather, tropical cyclones, and wildfires. Contributions that verify impact-based dynamical and statistical forecasts and provide process-level diagnostics, such as investigating sources of predictability, including large-scale modes of S2S variability (e.g., ENSO, MJO, QBO), ocean–atmosphere–land interactions, and atmospheric teleconnections, are encouraged.
- Advances in Monitoring and Diagnostics of S2S Climate: Topics include advances in monitoring systems, tools, and methodologies (e.g., reanalyses) for key modes of S2S climate variability (e.g., ENSO) and high-impact hazards (e.g., drought monitoring); newly developed indices for characterizing these S2S variability and hazards; and recent progress in scientific understanding of these phenomena and their underlying processes, including through attribution diagnostics.
- Applications of S2S climate information in Impact-based Decision Support Services (IDSS): Use, evaluation, and tailoring of S2S climate data, forecasts, and knowledge to support actionable decision-making. Topics include applications of dynamical and statistical forecasts to the development of decision-relevant products, stakeholder engagement and partnerships, coproduction, and the delivery of impact-based services that address societal, economic, and environmental challenges.
- Mid-Atlantic Regional Climate Analysis, Applications, and Services: Topics include advances in S2S climate analysis, monitoring, and prediction and in climate applications and services specific to the Mid-Atlantic.
A special session celebrating the 50-year legacy of NOAA’s Climate Workshop / CDPW, featuring invited and contributed presentations on the history of S2S climate research, operations, and services at the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), the National Weather Service (NWS), and across the broader community; recognizing key achievements; highlighting major milestones, long-term impacts, and future vision.
